If you are unfamiliar with Atlas Sound, it is the solo project of Bradford Cox, lead singer/songwriter for indie rock band Deerhunter. The first single from his upcoming album Parallax was released recently, called “Terra Incognita.” Parallax will be Cox’s third solo album, a follow up to 2009’s Logos.
This new single from Atlas Sound is a sprawling, epic track. The melody is guitar focused, and it starts acoustic and subdued before transforming into a spaced-out, atmospheric soundscape. Cox’s vocals haunt the latter half of the song, repeatedly looping a particular vocal segment, with the kind of lo-fi effects he is known for liberally applied. It is what we expect from Cox, but the production here seems to be much more crisp and lavish than in his previous work. After the highly-acclaimed Deerhunter album Halcyon Digest last year, it will be interesting to see what kind of direction Cox takes Parallax in. For now, it seems to be somewhat familiar territory, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
